When striking a match containing sulfur, a strong pungent odor is generated. This is "sulfurous acid gas" which is generated when sulfur is oxidized. Continuous inhalation of this gas as concentrations as low as 0.015ppm can trigger an asthma *¹. Knowing this Chugai Match repeatedly conducted research considering users' health, succeeded in production of sulfurless matches, and obtained a process patent for sulfurless matches. When striking a sulfur free match, a soft flame flickers, giving a feeling of security to the user.
